The Czech Republic is one of the world leaders in eye surgery. This is for a number of reasons like high standards and lower prices but also thanks to the Czech history with eye surgeries and lenses and also due to a number of procedures done each year which is gradually increasing.
The first reasons why the Czech Republic is one of the world leaders is the fact that the Czech Republic has statistically a high number of procedures done. This is as the patient is well educated about possible procedures and the fact that Czech healthcare system pays most of these procedures. Therefore doctors doing these procedures can specialize in a certain treatment and thus the doctors are more experienced than the doctors outside of the Czech Republic. As well as that, many people travel abroad for an eye operation to the Czech Republic, which increases the overall number of patients and thus doctors gain again many valuable experiences.
The second reason for the Czech Republic to be at the top of the charts is the fact that the Czech Republic has one of the most advanced technology and materials that are being used. Many doctors from the USA travel to the Czech Republic to learn about new procedures done or about new advancement. The reason for this is that the Czech Republic is a world leader in research and development in ophthalmology ( a medical branch dealing with the eyeball and orbit)
A good example of such research and development is a company called Medicem which has developed new lenses that are able to focus on many distances as well as that they function way better under a low-light condition than normal lenses.
Medicem is now developing a newer type of lenses that will age with the eye. This will be achieved by other laser operations which will be fast. The reason why these lenses are important is that we can see an increasing trend in lens replacement surgeries, as well as people, tend to live longer and thus the lenses have to be able to age with the eye. These lenses have to undergo clinical testing which will take around 5-7 years. The leading researcher has said that the research has already cost hundreds of millions of Euros and could not be done without the Czech experts and the tradition in research and development in ophthalmology in the Czech Republic.
As well as that some Czech clinic receive special contracts with manufacturers to be one of the first ones to receive a new product as well as a good price. This is mainly due to the volume of operations made in the Czech Republic. A good example of such companies can be Zeiss lenses which are widely used in the Czech Republic as well as Alcon lenses.
One of the other reasons is the amount of unique operation done. With the eye, there are many unique operations that can be done. This ranges from cosmetic surgery to a vision correction eye operations or to an eye lid operations. A good example of such unique operations is Golden eye sequins. This is when two golden glitters are implanted to the eye with the aid of laser into the eye.
Most doctors also argue that the reason why the Czech Republic is one of the world leaders in ophthalmology and why many people from abroad travel to the Czech Republic are its historical achievement in ophthalmology:
One of the first Czech achievements in ophthalmology was the first successful corneal transplant in 1905 by Edward Zim. This was the first successful organ transplant surgery in the world and was a significant surgery as it was a prove that organ transplant will work and many surgeons have started research in transplanting of other organs. This surgery is still performed today
The other achievement in Czech ophthalmology that is of a great importance in ophthalmology was the development of contact lenses and development of the manufacturing. This was developed by Otto Wichterle in 1961. Otto Wichterle has succeeded in making the first hydrogel contact lenses. He has made them with a homemade machine. In the first 4 months of 1962, he has made over 5500 contact lenses. In 1965 American company has bought rights for manufacturing of contact lenses in the USA. One of such companies was Bausch+Lomb. This exact company that is a clinical testing partner with the new Medicare lenses.
This and other reasons are why the Czech Republic is the best destination for an eye surgery. The best way to undergo a surgery abroad is through an agency like Praga Medica which will organize the whole trip and make the travel abroad a hassle free experience. The best thing about it is that it will not increase the cost of the procedure. Thus going with Praga Medica for and eye surgery abroad or alone to their cooperating clinic will cost you the same amount and maybe traveling without this agency can cost you even more as the travel agency will save your time and make sure that you will avoid all the tourist traps as well as you will get the benefit of cheaper guided tours around Prague.
The 38-year-old TLC documentary star and former big brother star has undergone a laser eye surgery. As well as Jodie Marsh other TV stars have also undergone this surgery.
Jodie Marsh wore her glasses since she was 11 years old. As she wanted to stop wearing lenses and she didn’t want to wear glasses as she said she looks hideous in them. She has decided to undergo this operation. She says that she was a little bit afraid but not that much as she has already undergone a plastic operation before (breast augmentation).
Jodie Marsh was surprised by the fact how fast the procedure was and couldn’t believe the fact that it was done so fast and she is very satisfied with the operation as she can finally see without any aid. She said that she doesn’t even recall how does it feel to see without any aid.
She is not the only one to undergo a laser eye surgery. One of these stars is Elton John. Elton John has undergone this procedure not only for the same reason as Jodie but also because his outfits always include a pair of gaudy costume glasses. This has forced his team to always remake these glasses and switch the normal lenses for prescription lenses which has increase the cost and was very time-consuming. As he says “ Do you have any idea how expensive it is to fit 5,000 pairs of gaudy custom glasses with prescription lenses?” As we can clearly see one of the main reasons for Elton John to undergo such operation was to save money and time with preparing of his outfits.
The F.R.I.E.N.D.S star Courtney Cox also underwent laser eye surgery as she wanted to stop wearing glasses while reading a script. She has said that sometimes she forgot her glasses and it was a disaster as she could not read without them.
Nicole Kidman has undergone LASIK surgery so that she doesn’t need glasses while having an acceptance speech for winning an Academy Awards.
Kim Kardashian always loved to wear glasses and she loved the way she looked in them but after she realized that Kayne’s song, Guilt Trip was about him wanting to tell her he hated them, she quickly scheduled her LASIK eye surgery to fix her vision.
The other stars that underwent laser eye surgery are: Tiger Woods ( he believes that laser eye operation has helped him with golf), LeBron James, Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon (she has made the decision after the movie legally blond), Brooke Shields Jessica Simpson, Kathy Griffin and many more.
As we can see many stars have undergone this type of procedure for several reasons. All of them have agreed that it was not an unpleasant experience and that they are very satisfied with the procedure and they can’t stop enjoying the fact that they do not have to wear glasses nor contact lenses. Laser eye surgery is a very common procedure and most of the people who wear glasses since their childhood tend to undergo this procedure.
US and South Korean scientists have developed a new technique using CRISPR technology that can prevent up to 10 000 disorders that are passed down the generations.
Scientists from this international team have for the first time removed a piece of faulty DNA that causes a deadly heart disease to run in families. They have achieved this without introducing harmful mutations which were one of the main problems in previous attempts.
The study was done by taking a sperm from a man with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy that was injected into healthy donated eggs alongside CRISPR technology was used to correct the defect. At the end of the experiment, most of the embryos were free from disease causing mutations.
This has not only allowed for the individual to not express the gene but also for reduction of the burden of this heritable disease on the family and eventually the human population. Patients affected by another disease than the one stated above that can benefit from such discovery are Huntington’s disease, cystic fibrosis and cases of breast and ovarian cancer caused by mutations in the BRCA genes. Potentially it can also help to an inherited form of Alzheimer’s disease and other diseases which are inherited.
They have achieved this by using CRISPR method which is based on the prokaryotic (bacterial) immune system where it inactivates certain genes. CRISPR was first used to change mosquitos so they cannot transmit diseases such as malaria. In the end of 2014 more than 600 studies were written about CRISPR technology to functionally inactivate genes in human cell lines and cells. CRISPR was named the breakthrough of the year 2015.
This new technique is primarily going to be used in the future for IVF embryos in order to ensure a healthy baby and also to eliminate diseases from our population. Many people fear that this method is going to be for more wealthy individuals and that it can cause certain individuals that come from these families to be better off in their life as they will be “super babies”. Czech IVF specialists have said that this method is not as expensive to perform as people think as well as when it will be used in IVF testing, economies of scale will apply to this method thus reduce the price.
