More about Cataract Surgery with Toric Lens

What are symptoms of a cataract?

Cataract means reduced transparency (opacity) and hardening of the eye lens that is normally clear. Most often we experience cataract after 60 years of age. Among the risk factors for cataract occurrence are mainly age, general diseases, diabetes, using some medicines on a long-term basis, smoking and eye injury.

How is cataract surgery done?

Cataract surgery with monofocal toric lenses is performed in local anaesthesia. The cloudy lens is painlessly crushed with ultrasound and removed through a microincision. Our experienced cataract surgeon implants a new high quality Acrysof monofocal toric yellow lens.

How long does cataract surgery take?

The surgery takes place in an ambulatory (outpatient) setting. The duration is about 10 minutes. The patient can leave the eye clinic immediately after the surgery.  Next day is post-operative check up.

Both eyes cataract surgery takes only 5 days in Prague. A thorough preoperative examination precedes the surgery in order to make and order custom-made toric lenses and there is at least one post-operative check up after each eye surgery.

What are toric lenses?

A toric lens is an intraocular lens that is shaped in a particular way in order to correct astigmatism. Standard IOL lenses have a spherical surface. A toric IOL lens, in contrast, is a geometric shape that looks like a donut. The shape of toric contact lenses creates different refractive, or focusing, powers on the vertical and horizontal orientations. The toric lens is custom-made.

What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a refractive error and causes vision to be blurred. Astigmatism is usually caused by an irregularly shaped cornea, more like a football or the back of a spoon.

Which cataract lens is right for me?

The standard cataract surgery with IOL monofocal toric lens comes with a high quality Acrysof lens implant produced by Alcon, an American company. We stock lens implants of other manufacturers as well, most popular are Alcon and Zeiss. Multifocal and multifocal toric versions of cataract lenses are also available.

What methods do you offer?

The price quoted is for a standard method where a small incision is made by our experienced cataract surgeon. We also offer a so called femtosecond cataract procedure where the incision is performed by a femtosecond laser LenSx hence achieving even greater precision and faster recovery times.
