Am I a good candidate for gastric sleeve surgery?

Generally, gastric sleeve surgery is indicated for morbidly obese adults. This would include people between 18 and 70 years of age with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher.  If you are taking antidepressants of any type, the weight can be lower.

You need to be able to endure the physical stress of surgery on your body. If you have further health issues due to obesity this needs to be considered. Also, considering psychological readiness is important given the dramatic lifestyle changes with gastric sleeve. For optimal results the following surgery, you’ll need the right attitude toward food, exercise and your overall health.

Are the doctors you work with certified?

Our partner clinic is was established in 2004, which has carried out more than 2,000 surgeries to date including laparoscopic and robotic. The two experienced surgeons in charge are, Dr. Jaroslav Tvarůžek, who has performed over 1,500 gastric sleeve surgeries. He is a senior surgeon who holds an international license authorizing robotic operations. Dr. Igor Šimoník performs more than 200 gastric sleeve surgeries each year.

The clinic serves only a small number of guests at any given time. So, you can rest assured that you will receive intimate and personalised care from very attentive doctors and nurses.

Can I pay by credit card or cash?

Yes, we accept VISA, VISA Electron, MasterCard and Maestro credit cards. However, our partner clinics do not accept American Express. Please verify that the highest limit of your credit card will allow payment for the surgery. We also accept cash in only these currencies CZK and EUR.

How many nights will I stay at the bariatric clinic?

Patients stay a minimum of 6 days in the hospital following surgery. In the event, you need to lengthen your stay it can easily be arranged.

Please note your initial consultation will take place during the same visit prior to surgery. An additional trip is not required.

Is it possible to do a conversion from a previous Lap Band surgery to gastric sleeve?

Yes, it is possible to undergo conversion at our partner clinic. Dr. Jaroslav Tvarůžek has expertise and experience in performing conversions.

If you have any complications with the gastric band, such as nausea, vomiting, dysphagia, slippage, or erosion, removal of your band can offer immediate symptom relief. However, if you don’t convert to another bariatric procedure, many patients regain weight following the Lap Band removal.

What are the risks of gastric sleeve surgery?

It’s a newer surgical procedure which means there is fewer data available about long-term weight loss or complications. There is the potential that it may cause dyspepsia/GERD/peptic ulcers.

Sleeve dilation may occur over time due to stretching and can result in more food being tolerated and renewed weight gain. Potential leaks along the suture line can occur. Unlike in other clinics, in case of complications arise or longer recovery time is needed, the patient can stay at the clinic for no additional cost.

What is the difference between gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery?

The major difference between the surgeries is that gastric bypass also removes part of the intestinal tract. Both surgeries work by surgically removing the side part of the stomach while leaving a smaller tub for storing food.

Where is the clinic located?

The clinic is part of a fully operating hospital allowing the patient access to other departments in case of complications. It is located approximately 3 hours southeast of Prague. You can fly to Prague or Brno whereupon our team will transport you directly to the hospital. We recommend you fly directly to Brno as it is much closer at 1 hour’s drive.
